How to Pick the Perfect Venue

Choosing your wedding venue is arguably the biggest decision you'll make in your entire planning journey. It sets the tone for everything — your guest list, your styling, your suppliers, even your dress. So before you fall head over heels for a place just because it looked stunning on Instagram, here's what you really need to think about.
1. Start With Your Numbers
Before you even pick up the phone to enquire about a venue, you need a rough guest list. Venues have minimum and maximum capacities, and there's nothing worse than falling in love with a venue that simply can't accommodate your crowd — or one so large your 80-person wedding gets swallowed up in a room built for 300.
2. Set Your Budget First
Venue costs vary wildly across Ireland — from intimate country houses to five-star hotel ballrooms. Knowing your overall wedding budget before you start viewing means you won't waste time (or heartbreak) on places outside your range. As a general rule, venue hire and catering typically account for around 40–50% of your total budget.
3. Consider the Full Picture
When comparing venues, don't just look at the headline price. Ask about minimum spend requirements, corkage fees, accommodation availability, whether they allow outside suppliers, and what's included in the package. The devil really is in the detail.
4. Visit in Person — Always
Photos and virtual tours are great starting points, but nothing replaces standing in the space yourself. Pay attention to the flow of the rooms, the natural light, the parking, the bridal suite, and how the team make you feel when you walk through the door. Your venue team will be with you all day, so that relationship matters.
5. Check the Dates
Saturdays in summer book up fast — sometimes 18 months to 2 years in advance. If you have your heart set on a particular venue, be ready to be flexible on the date, or consider a Friday or Sunday wedding which can also come with a more favourable price tag.
6. Trust Your Gut
At the end of the day, you'll know when a venue feels right. The best venue for you is the one that makes you and your partner look at each other and just know. That feeling? It's everything.
